The sight that greeted them as they knocked and then entered the detective’s cabin also caused the slightest smile to twitch at the corners of Cressida and Alfred’s mouths.

‘Oh, there you two are,’ Dotty said, or at least tried to say, as the giant nursery pins in her mouth made it sound more like ‘oh, err ooo ooh err’. She shook her head frustratedly, and Andrews tried to shrug but received a smack on his hand for his efforts.

Watching a middle-aged – one might even say, world-wearied – Scotland Yard detective be told off like a child in a nursery by a bespectacled young aristocrat was enough to elicit a giggle from Cressida and a brotherly smirk from Alfred. They couldn’t help themselves as they watched Dotty fuss over Andrews, pinning a new sling in place in quite the most expert fashion. That Dotty had also brought Ruby with her, who was now sitting next to Andrews, her bug-like eyes looking adoringly at him, just made the scene even more comical.

‘There,’ Dotty said, a look of satisfaction on her face. ‘That’s better. Much more supportive. And you two can stop laughing.’ She primly turned and faced her brother and best friend. ‘And what have you got there, Cressy? Yesterday’s paper?’

Cressida pulled it out from under her arm and checked the date. ‘No, today’s actually. But look at this.’ She showed them the headline. ‘Ties in rather well with the Irving siblings being added to my list of suspects. Plus, I just went and spoke to the only “tea lady” on the train, or at least the only one who wasn’t Mrs Drysdale.’

‘He would have known Mrs Drysdale,’ Andrews said.

‘Exactly. Mrs D introduced me to Martha. She was perhaps a little too interested in the goings-on, but I put that down to some sort of macabre fascination with it all—’

‘Now, who does that remind you of?’ Andrews asked, staring pointedly at Cressida.

Cressida gave him a withering look and carried on. ‘Pish posh, Andrews. But, truly, I believed her when she said she hadn’t been the one to call Kirby away from his post by Geraldine’s door. She looked far too disappointed not to be involved.’

Andrews raised an eyebrow, but then nodded.

‘You must keep your head still, Detective Andrews,’ Dotty admonished him. Cressida wondered if she heard a slight growl come from the older man, but she let it pass without comment.

‘Can I see the paper, Miss Fawcett?’ Andrews asked, ignoring Dotty’s admonitions and reaching out, wincing as he did so, for the newspaper.

‘Of course. I must confess not to understand all the lingo of the press, but it looks to me as if Mr Warriner had staked a large chunk of cash in some India-based companies but was pulling out. Coincidence that we’re on board now with two people who have a business in need of investment, who know Warriner… and who are based in India?’

Andrews held the paper with his good arm, flinching slightly as Dotty tied the knot of her makeshift sling tighter.
